This is the honeycomb vault - a.k.a. muqarnas - of the main iwan at the Nasir-ol Molk mosque in Shiraz. This way of building and decorating a vault is so very typical of Iranian Islamic architecture and can be found in almost every mosque in the country, also in neighbouring countries that were once under Persian control.
Not always is it as beautiful and elaborate as here, however ...
