votive candles

Posted by
Franz (Baden, Austria) on 19 January 2017 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

from my trip to Northern Italy in April 2016

Votive candles in the basilica of Como. It is a widespread tradition to light a candle in Catholic churches, either in memory of a loved one or as a gift to a Saint, or both ...

Though I'm not Catholic, I dedicate these candles to my late father, who died on this day 28 years ago.

@Phil Morris: Sorry about your mother, too! Mine died 5 years before my dad, so that's 33 years ago - though it seems like last week ...

A lovely low light capture and a deeply felt tribute to your Father. I still miss mine; he was just 66 and his lost battle with asbestosis left a gaping hole in the fabric of my space-time.

@Rick: My father was 83 when he died, but it was unexpected and came as a shock. But I guess that's always the case ...

A bit late here, Franz, but please allow my sincere condolences as well....the pain it never really eases but the memories always remain...my dad died about 33 years ago, as well... A beautiful image here - the candles and flames are so easily viewed thanks to your great exposure work....Hugs to you and your family ;-)

Lovely sentiment in memory of your father. I am not religiously aligned either but I always found this tradition of lighting candles a very thoughtful and respectful one.

The post processing estranges the candles from the reality...
I like "the unity" in your images.
