these are beautiful haflinger horses, a local breed that is famous for its hardiness and usefulness in the mountains. they spend summer on pastures high up in the mountains (in this case, above fiss and serfaus) - unless they are needed for work on the farm or in the woods (which nowadays does not happen as often as in the past, of course ...). most haflingers are blond, with magnificent long manes, but other colours can be found as well.
the fence-like things in the distance, between the horses, are avalanche barriers. they are supposed to break the momentum of the snow masses as they slide down the slopes in winter. they are made of massive steel girders and/or steel cables and can withstand quite a lot of pressure
