journey to cappadocia 14
this is the last image in the series! thanks once again for your interest and your valuable comments!
in march 2014, i spent four days in cappadocia, a most fascinating region in central turkey that has rightly been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO....
this is a bust of mustafa kemal atatürk, "father of turks" - army officer, revolutionary, statesman and the first president of the turkish republic, of which he was the founder. his surname, atatürk, was granted to him in 1934 by the turkish parliament and forbidden to be used by any other person. he lived from 1881 to 1938, and monuments in his honour can be found all over the country ...
from wikipedia (adapted): "atatürk was a military officer during world war I. following the defeat of the ottoman empire, he led the turkish national movement in the turkish war of independence, defeating the forces sent by the allies and eventually winning the war. atatürk then embarked upon a program of political, economic, and cultural reforms, seeking to transform the former ottoman empire into a modern, secular, and democratic nation-state. under his leadership, thousands of new schools were built, primary education was made free and compulsory, and women were given equal civil and political rights, while the burden of taxation on peasants was reduced. the principles of atatürk's reforms, upon which modern turkey was established, are referred to as "kemalism" [and were the unofficial state doctrine until a few years ago, when conservative religious groups won the majority in elections and began "softening" the strict separation of state and religion, i.e. islam].
