"lucy" is the name given to a female australopithecus afarensis, whose skeletal remains (or a considerable part of her skeleton at least) were found in the afar depression of ethiopia in 1974.
from wikipedia: "lucy is estimated to have lived 3.2 million years ago,and is classified as a hominid [i.e. the family of primates, including modern man and his ancestors as well as the great apes]. the skeleton shows evidence of small skull capacity akin to that of apes and of bipedal upright walk akin to that of humans."
