scottish impressions (1) - from my tour of scotland, august 2013
sir walter scott (1771-1832) was a scottish writer, poet, translator, lawyer and nationalist and the "father of the historic novel" (Rob Roy, Ivanhoe, The Lady of the Lake, ...). as co-founder of the "scottish revival movement" he managed to draw people's attention to scottish history and customs after years of neglect; he "found" the scottish crown jewels again (they had been locked away in edinburgh castle since the union of england and scotland in 1707); and he organised the visit of king george IV to scotland in 1822, the first visit by a reigning monarch since 1650, which he turned into a spectacle of bagpipes, kilts, tartans and sword dances.
his larger-than-life marble statue (by john steell) sits in the scott memorial on princes street, from where the poet has been "watching the world go by" since the monument was built (1840-1844).
thank you for your visits, comments and advice! they're very much appreciated!
