plenty of snow

Posted by
Franz (Baden, Austria) on 9 March 2013 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

some pictures from a week of skiing in the dolomites, february 2013 (12)

the road across passo gardena/grödner joch (2,130 m / 7,000 ft) has to be constantly maintained in winter, and it is often closed after heavy snowfall.
on our day trip to bozen/bolzano, we could not use in the morning, but by late afternoon it was open again, with snowploughs and snowblowers constantly at work ...

Really amazing photo, one that you rarely see and one you would not expect
to see such beauty in, 5 ***** 's, !~

@Phil Morris: thanks, phil! i guess the "mountains" of saskatchewan make heavy equipment like this unnecessary ... ;-)

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

An impressive image and impressive job of keeping the roads open.

Ainsley from Derbyshire, United Kingdom

I'm sure his work never ends, but great fun none the less. Beats the pressure of a commercial environment.

9 Mar 2013 2:34pm

@Ainsley: yes, in the winter months they are quite busy, the poor men! as to the commercial environment, there is of course some development along the road and on the pass, mainly inns and ski lifts, but there is LOTS of nature left ...

Slackwater - Don from Spokane, United States

A fine action shot. You caught the arc of snow very well.

9 Mar 2013 4:11pm

@Marilla: thanks, mari! yes, it's nice when you've come for the skiing ... ;-)

Judy aka L@dybug from Brooksville, FL, United States

Wow, that snow-blower/thrower surely sends the snow a long way off the road. I'm sure the equipment needed in the mountains is a totally different 'breed of cat'. ;D

9 Mar 2013 4:15pm

@Judy aka L@dybug: "heavy" equipment indeed !!!

Fantastic shot, franz, which shows the direct link we have to snowfall and "snow management"... really a visual synopsis of human adaptability.

9 Mar 2013 4:46pm

@Rick: thanks, sir! and yet, the road is closed quite frequently due to snowfall ...

In den Bergen kommt Schnee immer besser als bei uns im Flachland. (Dieses Jahr war es leider nur Matsch.) Das zarte Blau und die Sonnenstrahlen lassen ja schon wärmere Zeiten erhoffen!

I'm a bit worried about my upcoming trip...
I hope all this snow it will be gone by then...

10 Mar 2013 10:14pm

@Maria: not to worry, maria ... by july, the snow will be limited to the odd patch on the mountains, but all the roads will be cleared and there will be wonderful summer flowers everywhere !!!

@Japanalia: very true ! where would we be without them ?!?
