"there's the enemy !"

Posted by
Franz (Baden, Austria) on 21 February 2012 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

personal memories of beautiful days in nova scotia (15)

fortress louisburg
uniformed "french" officer pointing towards the harbour of louisbourg, where the english were expected to attack. however, the enemy troops came "from behind", from the land side, across the frozen marshes. the french were completely taken by surprise and surrendered the fortress without firing a single shot ...

happy ST, everyone !!

What a great shot Franz, dramatic gesturing just like on a stage, quite theatrical! I love your point of view and the simplicity of your composition. Indeed, got to watch out for those tricky Red Coats :^)

Göran from Skanör, Sweden

This story reminds me of several other incidents like this, for instance when the Swedish army in the winter 1657 - 1658 completely surprised the Danes by walking over the frozen sounds between Germany an Denmark. This resulted int he most expensive peace treaty the Danes have ever had to accept, about 1/3 of the total land area being taken by Sweden.

21 Feb 2012 3:15pm

@Göran: cool ... this just goes to show that you should never take things for granted !!! ;-))
