a visit to sw england and wales, august 2011 (93)

"CONFLUX - a union of the sacred and the anonymous" was an exhibition of over 20 polychrome sculptures by sean henry, located both inside and outside salisbury cathedral. it was open from 25 july to 31 october 2011, in accordance with the cathedral's art policy, which 'seeks to use visual art to inspire and allow contemplation of the cathedral from a new perspective'.

"walking woman" (2008, bronze, all weather paint) - an 8ft high figure of a woman strides purposefully towards the ornate west front of the cathedral. dressed in black, her enlarged scale and feeling of movement is heightened by the location the artist has chosen for the work. The contrast of the woman going towards the cathedral instead of coming out from it, and the colors from visitors, building and the main figure - strong frame !

Love your point of view - the black bronze clad figure looks very imposing striding towards the cathedral. The progress of the woman - marching into the church - has an element of allegory as well.

Wonderful "action" shot Franz. Your position behind the woman looking toward the cathedral gives us a keen sense of scale, especially with the other real people included as well. But I really like the way the dark toned woman echoes the tall windows of the facade... smart tight framing wins the day :^)

Would be strange seeing her in mid stride in a blizzard, or torrent of rain.
I think it looks like a sculpture, and then I look at the hands which in mild
comparison look so very real. Magnificent view of the picture. Beautiful
photo, Franz !~

Marta Mateu from Oix (Girona), Spain

I guess when you see this statue from a distance you think is a real person, how wonderful! I like how you focused l'showing her curves while people approaching from the other side. It really gives the feeling that crossed her eyes and greet. Very good!

Wow I have missed several of your recent images Franz! Very sorry about that...This one is fantastic - I, too, thought that it was a real lady heading towards the cathedral. This composition is tremendous, Franz, blending the ornate beauty of the cathdral and it's "real" visitors with the green grass and the shadow of this very life-like statue of the woman...This uis just a fabulous image Franz!!! I LOVE this one ;-)
