a visit to sw england and wales, august 2011 (53)
the pier at bangor, wales, jutting far into menai strait, the tidal waterway between the welsh mainland and the island of anglesey. the town of bangor is home to bangor university, founded in 1884 and now a part of the university of wales. it has currently 12,000 students and 2,000 staff.
here is what wikipedia says about the pier: "bangor has a pier, which is the second longest in wales and also the 9th longest in the british isles, being 1,500 feet (or 472 metres). it is named the garth pier, and was almost demolished in 1974 due to the poor condition it was in at the time. however, local support for the pier ensured that it survived and gained a grade 2 listed status, as it was considered one of the three finest surviving piers at the time. restoration work began in 1982 and did not finish until 1988. the pier was re-opened on saturday, 7 may 1988."
