a visit to sw england and wales, august 2011 (52)
caernarfon castle "besieged" by tourists and their cars and buses and boats ... a 21st century method of invasion and conquest ... ;-))
in the almost 800 years of existence, the castle has seen several sieges - the last ones during the english civil war of the 17th century, when cromwells troops tried three times to take the castle which was held by royalists. since then, neglect and decay, until the 19th century, when the mighty walls were restored. by then, most of the inner structures had disappeared, so that today the "castle" is mostly walls - albeit very impressive ones (see yd's post, for instance). the castle gained importance again when it was used for the investiture of the prince of wales, first in 1911, and again in 1969.
caernarfon castle is now a part of the world heritage site "castles and town walls of king edward in gwynedd".
