ireland (9) - the "italian" garden on garinish island, glengarriff.
garinish island, a.k.a. illnacullin ("island of holly" in gaelic), is located in the sheltered harbour of glengarriff in bantry bay in southwest ireland. the gardens of illnacullin owe their existence to the creative partnership, in the early decades of the 20th century, of annan bryce, then owner of the island, and harold peto, architect and garden designer.
here is what the official visitors' guide says about the "italian garden": "the italian garden is perhaps the outstanding feature of illnacullin. here, peto's genius combined with annan bryce's ideas and resources in the creation of this formal architectural garden. beautifully placed colonnades, flights of steps, terraces and pools, blend well with the natural setting."
