st. marx cemetery, vienna (7) - april 25, 2011

st. marx (from markus, not from karl marx!) is a former graveyard in vienna's third district. it was in use between 1784 and 1874, when it was abandoned with the opening of vienna's "central cemetery". st. marx cemetery is famous for two things - (a) the abundance of lilac bushes, which are a spectacular sight in spring, and (b) the grave of famous composer wolfgang amadeus mozart, who was buried here in 1791. today, the cemetery is a park open to the public and visited by many tourists and natives every day.

lid of an old family vault overgrown with ivy and sprinkled with the petals of spring flowers.

@PRASHANT: appreciate it, prashant!

Francisco Romero from Carbajal de la Legua, Spain

What a feeling of abandonment and of passing time. But still the iron rings, although rusty, keep their original forms. Very nice photograph, with the ivy as a mount of the rings, Franz.

8 May 2011 6:56am

@Francisco Romero: gracias, francisco! we believe that some things are for ever, but the ravages of time tell us a different story. only nature itself is timeless, it seems! ;-))

Richard from Duns, United Kingdom

@Richard: cheers, richard!

Judy aka L@dybug from Brooksville, Florida, United States

I'm glad you explained what this is, as I've never seen one of these before. You documented some family's spot very well.

8 May 2011 12:25pm

@Judy aka L@dybug: thanks, judy! don't you have covered stone vaults in the usa?!?

Doug Hickok from Charleston, South Carolina, United States

It looks as if, one day, nature will reclaim this old vault with ivy. We have some very fast growing vines in Charleston. Someone said if our city were left untrimmed, it would be covered in vines in a matter of years. That would be interesting to see!

Don from spokane, United States

I like the green pattern over the vault and its rings to provide access. Nice shot.

8 May 2011 3:09pm

@Don: thank you, don!

El pare from Prepirineu, Andorra

Nature, life, inevitably recover the land, even what seemed to belong to the deads.
Interesting colours and composition.

8 May 2011 3:30pm

@El pare: thanks, manel, and that's so true! i've even seen "photos" of what the world might look like 1000 years after the "end of mankind" - and even new york looks very different from today ... ;-))

Jason Politte from Conway, AR, United States

Excellent composition, Franz - I like how nature is reclaiming this for her own. Nicely seen!

8 May 2011 4:00pm

@Jason Politte: thank you, jason! time and nature will do away with many of man's follies, i'm sure ...

8 May 2011 5:11pm

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

I'm surprised it has taken the ivy so long. A lovely shot of these vines taking over.

8 May 2011 5:14pm

@Steve Rice: thanks, steve! perhaps it was removed once or twice over the years, who knows?

Marta Mateu from Oix (Girona), Spain

@Marta Mateu: gracias, marta!

Williams from East LaHave, Nova Scotia, Canada

Beautiful. To me the iron rings give it an eerie feeling.

8 May 2011 6:20pm

@Williams: thanks, paul! we wouldn't want to lift that lid, would we?!?

Rosa Frei - Photo Emotions from Ouarzazate, Morocco

AMH from Buenos Aires, Argentina

pretty picture that is beautiful. do not understand what are the rings? . a big kiss. Alejandra

8 May 2011 8:37pm

@AMH: gracias, alejandra! the rings are for raising the lid when another member of the family was buried. the lid covers the vault, and if you want to get in, you have to lift it. so you fix cables to the rings and lift it with the help of a crane! un besito!

Rick from Toronto, Canada

The earth is gradually swallowing up and reclaiming everything here. An unusual and hence very effective image.

8 May 2011 8:42pm

@Rick: thanks, rick! if we allow nature its way, the works of man will all end in this way ... a reassuring or a horrible thought ?!?

Denny Jump Photo from Easton, PA, United States

klausZ from Kufstein, Austria

9 May 2011 2:07pm

@klausZ: danke, klaus! was du lobenswert findest, findet meine frau manchmal lästig!

Melissa from Deep South Texas, United States
