light at the end of the tunnel

st. marx cemetery, vienna (5) - april 25, 2011

st. marx (from markus, not from karl marx!) is a former graveyard in vienna's third district. it was in use between 1784 and 1874, when it was abandoned with the opening of vienna's "central cemetery". st. marx cemetery is famous for two things - (a) the abundance of lilac bushes, which are a spectacular sight in spring, and (b) the grave of famous composer wolfgang amadeus mozart, who was buried here in 1791. today, the cemetery is a park open to the public and visited by many tourists and natives every day.

this row of graves does indeed look like a tunnel through the dense vegetation of bushes and trees. but as with every tunnel, there's a light at the end ...

@Pavan Kaul: thank you, pavan!

Roman from Thiersee, Austria

Ausgezeichnete Komposition. Du hast das wesentliche Detail genau an die richtige Position gesetzt und führst die Augen des Betrachters über den diagonalen Weg dorthin.
Ich habe glaube ich noch nie so einen fotogenen Friedhof gesehen ;-)

6 May 2011 5:44am

klausZ from Kufstein, Austria

absolut genialer blickwinkel!

Marta Mateu from Oix (Girona), Spain

I love this cemetery seems a bit deserted, no one cares, it sure is very old. In this picture I have the feeling of entering a tunnel into the unknown. I love it!

6 May 2011 5:37pm

@Marta Mateu: thanks, marta! you're right, it's an abandoned cemetery, and it is cared for as a park. glad you like it!

6 May 2011 7:33pm

@Steve Rice: thanks, steve! i wouldn't want to find out ... ;-))

Marilla from Turku, Finland

This is great, I love the tones and the old-fashioned view. Old graveyards are fascinating.

6 May 2011 7:46pm

@Marilla: thanks, and i agree fully!

k@ from Paris, France

The meaning of sucha a title in a cemetary, that's really deep & clever ! Love the tones too.

6 May 2011 7:56pm

@k@: thank you, karine, this is much appreciated!

Francisco Romero from Carbajal de la Legua, Spain

But this light is not an escape from a horrific place. Your cemetry is so nicely and invitingly portrayed that I would rather stay in it than go elswhere.

6 May 2011 7:59pm

@Francisco Romero: thanks, francisco, but i don't know about staying .... visiting, yes! ;-))

Ted from South Wales, United Kingdom

love the line of the path against the whole background of the cemetery.

6 May 2011 8:41pm

@Ted: cheers, ted!

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

A nice PoV here where the headstones create a "wall" leading to the light. Amazing how the light stands out "at the end of the tunnel" while the vegetation is so thick everywhere else that you can't see any light through it. The lack of sunlight explains why there isn't as much greenery here as in previous photos. Perhaps there aren't any surviving relatives of those buried here?

6 May 2011 11:06pm

@Steven: thanks, steven, and yes, you're right - in the vast majority of cases there aren't any living relatives! consider - the graveyard was closed for burials in the 1870s, more than a century ago, so it's not really surprising. besides, most graves have been leveled so that only the stone remains. a great weekend to you and yours!

Eric Cousineau from Sherwood Park, Canada

Love the friendly and inviting atmosphere you have created with your pp treatment! Well done Franz! ;-)

6 May 2011 11:27pm

6 May 2011 11:41pm

Denny Jump Photo from Easton, PA, United States

Hi Franz - Yes I really like this look and the path leading out is perfect...The overgrowth adds so much drama and intrigue to this...beautifully captured, good friend!

Maria Draper from California, United States

Thanks Franz for your comment. Photos taken in a beautiful country can only come out beautiful! :)
Just looked at your profile page and at first glance I could immediately tell that is Pasterze in the background. I visited it this past September and I really liked that entire area....Heaven to me! :) You can have the Heaven near by me, I'll settle for the one by you! :)
This image here, however, it's kind of spooky. Saw it the other day but I was too lazy to log in and leave my comment.
