st. marx cemetery, vienna (5) - april 25, 2011
st. marx (from markus, not from karl marx!) is a former graveyard in vienna's third district. it was in use between 1784 and 1874, when it was abandoned with the opening of vienna's "central cemetery". st. marx cemetery is famous for two things - (a) the abundance of lilac bushes, which are a spectacular sight in spring, and (b) the grave of famous composer wolfgang amadeus mozart, who was buried here in 1791. today, the cemetery is a park open to the public and visited by many tourists and natives every day.
this row of graves does indeed look like a tunnel through the dense vegetation of bushes and trees. but as with every tunnel, there's a light at the end ...

@Steven: thanks, steven, and yes, you're right - in the vast majority of cases there aren't any living relatives! consider - the graveyard was closed for burials in the 1870s, more than a century ago, so it's not really surprising. besides, most graves have been leveled so that only the stone remains. a great weekend to you and yours!
